How can I include my family in prayer?

  • Make the decision to begin family prayer. Don't make it replace individual bedtime prayers, or some other special family time--make it a special time to gather as a family to talk to God.

  • Pray daily personal prayers to God & Our Lady or your special saint for the strength to begin, and for acceptance and perseverance in family prayer. Make up a personal prayer for help, such as: "Jesus, I want to begin family prayer in my home. Help us to do this. I place my trust in you."

  • Discuss your desire to begin family prayer with your spouse.

  • Find a comfortable time for your family, and stick to it. Often it helps to make family prayer time before or after an already set event such as, after a meal, before bedtime, before bath time, etc.

  • Set a date to begin.

  • What do I do if a family member does not participate?

  • Do not force a spouse or teen who may not be ready. Just keep asking the Holy Spirit to bring them to a desire to join in family prayer. Do not preach at anyone.

  • If any member of your family is not interested, ask them to physically be there when you pray as a family, even if they just want to remain quiet. Let the Holy Spirit do His job.

  • What time/place is best?

  • Have a special place in your home where you gather to pray together. If possible, have a crucifix or picture of Jesus or Mary in this place.

  • Turn off the TV & radio.

  • Adopt a routine. For example, always begin and end with the sign of the cross, sing a favorite family hymn, light a candle, or ask for prayer requests.

  • Let each family member participate. Older members can read a bible verse, younger members can lead in song, such as "Jesus loves me" or "This little light of mine."

  • If you miss a day, begin again the next day.

  • What is the mission of the Family Prayer Committee?

Our mission is to promote the rosary and other forms of prayer in the home.

What do members of the Family Prayer Committee do?

Members meet 1 hour a month (4th Monday at 6:30 PM) to plan how to promote prayer in the home. Members of the group develop and distribute special publications explaining how to get started praying as a family, how to say the rosary and how to participate in the various prayer services available at St. Francis.

What are the regular events and activities which the Family Prayer Committee is responsible for?

  • Advent Angel for families at Christmas

  • Promoting Perpetual Adoration for families during Advent and Lent

  • Family Picnic and softball is in Spring

  • Promoting family attendance at Stations of the Cross during Lent

  • Holy Family Sunday (Sunday following Christmas)

  • Connecting with CYO & Confirmation students who want to promote family prayer

  • Promoting Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

  • What other information do members of the Family Prayer Committee develop or distribute?

  • Monthly Vernacular article on some aspect of prayer & family spirituality

  • Weekly Prayer tips in the Bulletin

  • Weekly materials in the Resource Rack (in St. Clare Hallway). Materials include:

Listing of the Daily Mass Readings for the month
    Novenas
