History of Parish Nurse

The Parish Nurse organization for St. Francis of Assisi was brought about in 1993 by 8 nurses forming a board and developing the ground work for the organization. These volunteers and others worked for the next 6 years accomplishing many goals. In the fall of 1999 St. Francis of Assisi added a full-time parish nurse to its staff.

What is a Parish Nurse?

Parish nurses are registered nurses who have made a stewardship commitment of their time and professional talents to help fellow parishioners.

Combining the concepts of preventive medicine and wellness, the parish nurse program advocates self responsibility and participation in one's own health care.

Parish Nursing is anchored in the spiritual needs of parishioners and uses the holistic concept of wellness, mind and soul as its model, making Christ's love known in our nursing and our parish.

Activities of a Parish Nurse:

  • H - Health Educator --> *Promotes understanding of the relationships between lifestyle, attitude, faith and well being.
  • E - Educator --> *Supports and promotes health education among parishioners.
  • A - Advocate & Resource Person --> *Assists people to utilize existing parish and community health resources.
  • L - Liaison to Community Services --> *Professional link to community services.
  • T - Teacher of Volunteers --> *Recruits and coordinates volunteers.
  • H- Healer of Body, Mind, and Spirit --> *Proclaims the mission of Jesus by preaching the Gospel of healing.
*from Striepp, King & Scott(1993), Nurses in Churches, "Journal of Christian Nursing"

Special Services By Arrangement

Meals, light housekeeping, respite care and transportation can sometimes be arranged on a temporary basis, when a medical need necessitates it. Trained volunteers from our parish provide these services.

  • Blood Pressure Screenings - Blood pressures are taken after all Masses on the first weekend of every month in the bride's room located at the back of the church.

  • Post-Baptism Newsletter - Parents of babies baptized at the parish are enrolled in a newsletter through Our Sunday Visitor Magazine Co. It offers guidance in the spiritual parenting of children.
  • Guest Speakers - They are arranged for parish presentations on various health topics.
  • Alzheimer's Support Group - Meetings are on the third Thursday of every month at 7: 00 pm in the Parish Ministry House conference room. Anyone who has a  personal interest in dementia is welcome to attend.
