The Special Needs Coordinator serves as the liaison between the Special Needs Committees and the Parish Pastoral Council.

Goals and activities to fulfill the mission of each committee are established yearly.

Bereavement Committee

Mission:

To offer support and meet the special needs of fellow parishioners who have experienced the death of an immediate family member.

Activities:

Mass cards with a letter are sent to the bereaved of our parish who have lost an immediate family member. Committee members follow up to make phone calls and/or visith the bereaved to offer prayers and support. The committee meets bi-monthly on the 1st Sat. at 9:00 a.m. in the Ministry House to repont on assignments. Programs and training for bereavement volunteers are provided throughout the year as needed. Host All Souls Day reception 1st Sat in Nov. following 8:00 a.m. mass for all parishoners.

Charities Committee

Mission:

To donate our time and talent to help bridge the needs of our community through various activities.

Activities:

Twice yearly, this committee sponsors blood drives for the American Red Cross. They also maintain food collection containers located in the entrances of the church. Donations are taken by the committee to St. Anthony Family Shelter for distribution to the needy. Holiday and May food drives are conducted at the school. "Summer Harvest" benefits a number of charities, including St. Anthony Family Shelter, Guadalupe Clinic, Gerard House, Birthline, Harbor House, Dear Neighbors Ministries, Center of Hope and A Better Choice, by collecting household goods, office supplies, baby items, health supplies, etc, from the parish. During the summer, volunteers help with Bingo at Lakewood Height Nursing Home.

Funeral Dinners

Mission:

To serve a meal for the family and friends of the deceased following the funeral.

Activities:

The Funeral Committee and volunteers serve a dinner to the family and friends of the deceased following the funeral of parish members. Volunteers from the parish that sign up during the Stewardship drive provide the desserts, salads, cakes, etc., for the meal. Rita arranges for the meat and potatoes. Everyone from the list of volunteers is called from time to time, although we are not always able to make connections. We ask for your patience if your name is on the list and we always accept volunteers. Please call Rita or Karen if you have any questions. We would like to thank everyone who has volunteered their time and food.

Good Neighbor Program

Mission:

Works together with the Parish Nurse Ministry to give assistance to poeple in need within the parish boundaries.

Ministry for Persons with Disabilities

Mission:

To welcome and support parishioners with physical, mental or sensory disability to full participation in parish life. This is accomplished through:

1) Affirmation - assuring that people with disabilities feel welcome and being sensitive to their needs.

2) Communication - large print missalettes, assistive hearing devices for the celebration of the Eucharist, etc.

3) Accessibility - bathrooms with wheelchair facilities, ramps, curb cuts, etc.

4) Advocate for Supportive Services - support groups, respite care.

5) Education - PSR

"...The question is not how we can help people with disabilities (which is an important question)...a more important question is how can people with disabilities give their spiritual gifts to us and...call us to love?" Henry Nouwen

Activities:

The Inclusion Committee meets as needed to assess and address needs related to its mission. there is an urgent need for parishoners with disabilities to join the committee.

"Inclusion begins in our hearts. It begins with affirmation. We should open our hearts to one another and recognize the strengths of every person...When we open our hearts and our community to the gifts each person brings, we are all strengthened." Joseph Cardinal Bernardin

Mourning Light Ministry

Mission:

To offer spiritual and emotioinal support for bereaved families who have experienced the death of their baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death whether the death of their baby occurred recently or several years ago.

Members plan an annual Memorial Service for families on December 28 (Feast of the Holy Innocents) with Rite of Blessing and blessed religious mementos for families. Twice yearly, a 9-week Miscarriage Bible Study Support Group is offered with a memorial service at the end. We welcome everyone to join this new ministry and offer help and share new ideas at our periodic meetings.
